AUDITION REQUIREMENTS
Please prepare a one-minute Shakespeare monologue.

REHEARSAL SCHEDULE
April-May (depending on actor schedules); will include both weekday and weekend afternoons and evenings.

ACTOR STIPENDS
All actors cast will receive a stipend at the end of the run.

SYNOPSIS
In this daring reimagining of Shakespeare’s classic farce, Legacy Stage’s The Taming of the Shrew, we meet our heroine, Katharina, a fierce and independent woman, staring down the reality that she must marry before her younger sister Bianca. A determined Petruchio sets out to win Kate’s heart. Prepare for a riveting theatrical experience delivering a unique and captivating take on love, independence, and the pursuit of agency.

Note: All violence and intimacy will be choreographed with actor boundaries in place.

  • Choreographed physical intimacy/Choreographed Kissing
  • Choreographed staged fighting
  • May include depiction of alcohol use
  • Discussions of intimacy
  • Verbal abuse/misogyny/domestic violence

Casting notes 

  • All races/ethnicities will be considered for all roles.
  • Certain ages are being kept in mind for particular characters – this is not set in stone, but is in the mind of the director as a consideration.
  • Gender adjusting will occur. In most instances pronouns will be changed to those of the performer.
  • Some roles described below may be adapted as influenced by the performers who audition.
  • Most characters may witness choreographed kissing and intimacy unless it is against their expressed boundaries.
  • Some actors may play multiple roles.

  • 4-5 SERVANTS/PLAYERS (Identifies and/or presents any gender): various named characters ie/ Tranio, Biondello, Grumio, Curtis, etc.
  • BAPTISTA (Identifies and/or presents any gender): A rich citizen of Padua. In their 50s or 60s. Parent of Katherine & Bianca
  • KATHARINA (Identifies and/or presents female): Daughter to Baptista. 30s or 40s.
  • BIANCA (identifies and/or presents female): Daughter to Baptista. Late 20s, early 30s.
  • VINCENTIO (identifies and/or presents any gender): an old person of Pisa.
  • LUCENTIO (identifies and/or presents male): son to Vincentio; in love with Bianca.
  • PETRUCHIO (identifies and/or presents male): a Gentleman of Verona; Suitor to Katharina. 30s or 40s.
  • GREMIO (identifies and/or presents male): Suitor to Bianca.
  • HORTENSIO (identifies and/or presents male): Suitors to Bianca. Late 20s, early 30s.
